The Department of Health (DoH) under the direction of the Secretary of State for Health, is responsible for health and personal social services in England. Separate responsibilities are held by the Secretaries of State for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In England the Department sets overall health policy, including policies on public health and those relating to the health consequences of environmental and food matters.
The health care system is financed mainly through central government general taxation together with an elementof national insurance contributions.
