The treatment of diabetes and its long-term effects is complex and costly. Moves are afoot in industry to improve the care chain for diabetes and to create care packages that are clearly beneficial to the patient, reduce the risks of serious long-term damage, and keep costs in the health sector to a minimum.

This report sets out to give an overview of the present situation in Switzerland, neighbouring countries and other states familiar with the subject. Approaches to the treatment of diabetes, the appropriate disease management programmes (DMPs) and existing conditions are identified and explained.
